Will Semiconductor, a leading CMOS image sensor (CIS) manufacturer, has released a series of announcements, unifying its brand image under the name "OmniVision Group." While retaining the "Integrated Circuit (Group)" suffix to reserve space for future business expansion, the company also uses "OmniVision" to strengthen its technology identity and enhance customer and investor awareness of its CIS business. These announcements include board renewals, amendments to the company's articles of association, a stock option incentive plan, and a company name change.

Will Semiconductor initially focused on distribution, resulting in limited brand recognition. OmniVision, on the other hand, boasts a significant international presence due to its extensive CIS technology expertise.

In 2019, Will Semiconductor acquired an 85.53% stake in Beijing OmniVision for 14.999 billion yuan through a combination of share issuance and cash, officially integrating OmniVision into its portfolio. This acquisition, often described as a "snake swallowing an elephant" merger, transformed Will Semiconductor from a traditional distributor into a chip design giant.

Founded in 1995, OmniVision Technologies is one of the world's top three CMOS image sensor (CIS) design companies. It supplied CIS chips for the Apple iPhone 4 and maintains a leading position in the industry in terms of both technological strength and market share. In 2016, a Chinese consortium including Huachuang Investment completed its privatization for $1.9 billion, delisting the company from Nasdaq and renaming it Beijing OmniVision.

The company is shifting resources toward CIS, with R&D investment reaching 3.245 billion yuan in 2024, representing 15% of its design revenue. The company has accumulated over 4,865 patents covering core CIS technologies. This focused strategy has enabled OmniVision to establish a technological advantage in applications such as smart driving and high-end mobile phones.
